Ten disabled participants in the Harrisonburg/Staunton Project Healing Waters Program attended the South River Fly-fishing outing. Tommy Lawhorne and Kevin Little (owners of the South River Fly Shop) funded the event. The store also provided professional guides to coach those learning to hook and catch trout.
The crowd met at the South River Fly Shop in Waynesboro at 8:30 AM on Sunday, June 22nd. After being equipped with some store furnished fishing equipment, the group left promptly at 9:00 AM, for the Special Regulation Area of South River for fun time on the water.
The vets, guides, and volunteers fish till 12 noon and head for lunch at the Heritage Restaurant in downtown Waynesboro… about 10 minutes away from fishing. The group chatted about their fishing luck… the fish grew in size based on the time talked by the vet. Two trophies were awarded. Dave Wiggens received the largest trophy based on a camera photo provided by the guide. Ken Brown received the smaller trophy for telling the truth.
In summary, all the vets had fun, formed positive relationships, and are demanding more fishing outings. Very many kudos go to the South River Fly Shop for the continuing help they provide to wounded warriors.
